Weeknotes 6

We’ve been doing a weekly walk to the coffee and doughnut shop for coffee and doughnuts. They’re the fancy, expensive, trendy kind of doughnuts that cost £2 or £3 per nut(?) but would cost like one dollar in the US. They call them donuts in the US instead of doughnuts – I guess the “ugh” is for the sound you make when you realise how expensive they are (I just came up with that!). I do have a soft spot for those supermarket jam doughnuts that cost 50p for a pack of 5. I suppose I could have 20-30 supermarket jam doughnuts for the price of one trendy doughnut, but is eating 20-30 supermarket jam doughnuts actually good for you?

I read a couple of stories from Pastoralia by George Saunders today. I’ve ordered a paper copy of Lincoln in the Bardo which I hope to read next week. I tried a few times listening to the audiobook version, because it has such an excellent cast of voice actors, but I honestly had difficulty following it. I find it tricky concentrating on audiobooks at the best of times, but Lincoln in the Bardo dips in and out of diary entries(?) from the many different characters – every couple of hundred words (sometimes every other sentence) a kind of annoying robotic voice announces the change by reading aloud a citation or other notation. Anyway, it’s really distracting – hopefully an easier read than listen!

Signing up for the doctors and dentist is a hassle, isn’t it? I have a theory that renters (particularly in cities like London) have diminished health outcomes because they tend to move frequently, and don’t register with a new general practice or dental practice until they need an appointment – registering then adds a week (or more) onto the lead time for that appointment. It’s particularly bad at the moment as many dental practices are not accepting new NHS patients. I can’t find a dentist nearby that is accepting NHS patients. I should probably avoid eating those 20-30 supermarket jam doughnuts.
