Weeknotes 3

We moved. We’re temporarily living in Worcester until we figure out what to do next. When we planned this I had (foolishly) hoped COVID restrictions would be starting to relax a little bit so we’d be able to visit some cities and view houses etc. Given we’re not under any urgent obligation to leave our current place, I suppose we’ll be staying here for longer than I’d hoped.

I had the week off to move house but we were done by Tuesday evening, so I had a bit of time to relax. I didn’t do a great job of not thinking about work. Over Christmas it was easier because hardly anything was happening in the office, but now everyone is back doing stuff I couldn’t help looking at the Slack and GitHub apps once or twice. I should really just delete them from my phone.

About work: we’ve recently been doing some prototyping and exploratory work with GraphQL. The GraphQL language is really great for sketching out API ideas in a compact and expressive way. I did a bit of polishing on my GraphQL Sketchpad app this week to improve some bits and bobs. It’s basically just hacked together from existing tools like Codemirror and GraphQL Tools but I’ve personally found it useful for sketching out and sharing ideas with the rest of the team. I’m going to try building some more little side projects this year – I feel like I haven’t scratched any of my own itches in a while.

I tried cooking Red Beans and Rice this weekend. I couldn’t find any andouille (or kielbasa) so I ommitted it. I also couldn’t get a smoked ham hock so I subbed in bacon. I also couldn’t find any red beans so I swapped for pinto beans. And then I gave up and made Frijoles Charros instead. I like beans.
