Weeknotes 2

We’re pretty much packed up and ready to go. I’ve spent the week looking at our massive pile of stuff, worrying it wont fit in the van, picking a random thing to freecycle, and then repeating. Makes me wonder how I ever survived when I moved out to university with one box and one bag.

I started replaying Fallout: New Vegas after watching Hbomberguy’s video about how great it is. I kind of went off massive open world RPGs for a while because as much as I like the non-linear storytelling and exploration, I really can’t be bothered with over-the-top character stats progressions or (yuck) inventory management. I’d really like for games to have a complexity selector alongside the difficulty selector to turn off all the stuff I personally find unnecessary: excessive loot, maintenance/crafting, micromanaging character stats and inventory.

We did one of those webcam-based escape room things. It was pretty fun, if not a bit strange hanging out with friends-of-friends. Obviously the pandemic has shrunk everyone’s social activity: no more friends-of-friends, no more chit-chat with colleagues from other teams/departments, and no more meeting new people.

I’ve been watching videos of end-to-end journeys on the Vancouver SkyTrain. I’ve never been to Vancouver but it looks very nice with mountains and the trees and the blue sky, and I think you get a good feel for a city by using its public transport. It’s also pretty relaxing to have on in the background. As much as I don’t miss cramming onto the tube in the morning, there is something about being driven around, sitting quietly, and listening to a podcast (and no internet connection).
